After chemotherapy, if your white blood cells are low, you are more likely to get infections, a condition called neutropenia. Any infection can also worsen more quickly and a trivial infection could become life threatening within hours if it isn’t treated. A PICC line is used to give you chemotherapy and other medicines. The PICC line provides a direct path into your bloodstream. This gives germs the possible access into your body.
Predetect is device that can fit around a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) for two weeks after chemotherapy that can detect and monitor early signs of infection using tiny smart sensors within the device.
Shortlisted for Predetect - RSA Wearing Intelligence 2.0 Brief 2017/18
Commonly after chemotherapy, white blood cells are low meaning patients are more likely to get infection.
The Problem - Neutropenia
After chemotherapy, if your white blood cells are low, you are more likely to get infections - a condition called neutropenia. Any infection can also worsen more quickly and a trivial infection could become life threatening within hours if it isn’t treated.
Insight - PICC Line
A PICC line is used to give you chemotherapy and other medicines. The PICC line provides a direct path into your bloodstream. This gives germs the possible access into your body. There are two types of infection you could get, local infection, this can occur where the PICC line enters you body and systemic infection, this can occur if germs get into the bloodstream.
Insight - Biopatch
Biopatch is a device that reduces catheter-related bloodstream infections, local infections and skin colonization of microorganisms. It employs the proven antimicrobial chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and provides ongoing antisepsis.
There are three sensors at the base of the disc to sense the warning signs of localised and systemic infections. Predetect will be looking out for a body temperature over 38˚C or below 35˚C, a pH value between 6.5 and 8.5 and if skin temperature soars above 30˚C.
Predetect App System
Once signed up to the app the patient will be greeted with their readings. If a reading goes over its safety level then it will be highlighted in red and a warning will be sent to their phone. The patient will be able to see detailed readings with suggestions of what actions to take next. In an emergency e.g. a prolonged high temperature, the patients oncologist can directly contact them with advice.
The Benefits - The Hospital
Having Predetect would bring many benefits such as, reduced hospital admissions, reduced treatment costs, reduces the use of stronger antibiotics and it measures both localised and general system infections to improve patient outcomes.

The Benefits - The Patients
Patients can stop worrying and have a piece of mind as Predetect will constantly monitor signs of infection. Patients can resume a normal life until their white blood return to a safe level.
